A cryptocurrency is a form of digital or virtual currency that relies on cryptography for securing transactions, controlling the creation of new units, and verifying the transfer of assets. Operating on decentralized networks, most cryptocurrencies are built using blockchain technology, ensuring transparency, immutability, and decentralization. Bitcoin, created in 2009 by an anonymous entity known as Satoshi Nakamoto, was the first cryptocurrency and remains the most prominent. Other popular cryptocurrencies include Ethereum (ETH), which supports smart contracts, and Binance Coin (BNB). Cryptocurrencies can be used as digital cash for payments, a store of value, or as a medium for decentralized applications and investments in decentralized finance (DeFi).
