What Is Mitosis (MITO) and How Does it Work?
What Is Mitosis (MITO)?
Mitosis is a Layer 1 blockchain designed to enhance capital efficiency and accessibility in decentralized finance (DeFi). In many DeFi protocols, deposited tokens often become locked and unusable elsewhere, limiting their utility. At the same time, high-yield opportunities—such as exclusive liquidity campaigns—are frequently reserved for large investors, leaving smaller users at a disadvantage.
Mitosis tackles these issues by transforming user deposits into Hub Assets: tokenized representations that can move seamlessly across multiple blockchains. These assets can be deployed in community-managed pools for steady returns or allocated to custom strategies targeting higher yields, ensuring funds remain productive and accessible.
How Does Mitosis (MITO) Work?
Modular Architecture
Mitosis is built with a modular structure that separates execution and consensus layers. The execution layer supports the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers to use familiar Ethereum tools and deploy smart contracts effortlessly.
The consensus layer relies on Proof of Stake (PoS) and integrates CometBFT and the Cosmos SDK. This ensures fast, secure transaction finalization while enabling Mitosis to incorporate upgrades from both Ethereum and Cosmos ecosystems.
Hub Assets
Through a hub-and-spoke model, Mitosis connects to major chains like Ethereum, Arbitrum, and BNB Chain. When users deposit tokens into a Mitosis Vault, they receive an equivalent amount of Hub Assets on the Mitosis blockchain. These assets offer greater flexibility, enabling cross-chain movement and strategic deployment without traditional bridging complexities.
The typical workflow includes:
- Depositing tokens into a vault on a supported chain.
- Receiving Hub Assets 1:1 on Mitosis.
- Allocating assets to passive yield strategies (EOL) or higher-risk opportunities (Matrix).
- Earning yield-bearing tokens (miAssets or maAssets) that accumulate returns automatically.
- Receiving rewards via a transparent proof-based distribution system.
Key Features of Mitosis (MITO)
Ecosystem Owned Liquidity (EOL)
EOL enables users to pool assets and delegate liquidity management to the community. Participants receive miAssets representing their share and automatically earn multi-chain yields. This approach combines the benefits of institutional-scale liquidity with democratic governance, allowing users to vote on strategy decisions.
Matrix
Matrix offers curated DeFi campaigns with clear terms and real-time yields. Users deposit Hub Assets to receive maAssets, which immediately begin generating returns. Each campaign details supported assets, reward mechanisms, and associated risks, helping users make informed choices while providing protocols with efficient liquidity solutions.
Liquidity Booster
This program allows users to earn extra MITO token rewards by depositing through integrated wallet apps. It helps direct liquidity to promising DApps, supporting ecosystem growth while enhancing individual returns.
Mitosis Tokens
The ecosystem uses a three-token model:
- MITO: The utility token used for staking, rewards, and ecosystem participation.
- gMITO: The governance token, obtainable by staking MITO. It confers voting rights on proposals and can be converted 1:1 back to MITO.
- tMITO: A time-locked version of MITO that unlocks after 180 days with bonus rewards. It remains usable in staking, liquidity provision, and as collateral during the lock-up period.

Conclusion
Mitosis reimagines DeFi liquidity by introducing cross-chain Hub Assets and flexible yield strategies. Its modular, EVM-compatible architecture and community-driven frameworks like EOL and Matrix empower users to maximize capital efficiency and access opportunities traditionally limited to large players.
